Extreme Makeover: Classroom Edition {Linky}

I am so excited to be linking up with Amanda over at Primary Gal for this year's Extreme Makeover: Classroom Edition.   Instead of a theme, I decided to go with a color scheme of teal, purple, and green with splashes of pink.

Calendar & Daily Objectives
Classroom Jobs
Simple classroom job cards that you can grab in my TpT store or my classroom packets.  I place them on library pockets because you can place them in any extra area like the side of this shelf.
You can grab up these classroom colors in my store.  They come in several different shapes, sizes and orientations so that you can find a set to fit in whatever space you need.

I repainted the lockers this year to match the theme... they were light blue.

I think I may have 800 tissue balls in my room this year but I love them!  I think they soften up a room and add color at the same time.  Each of my table numbers hangs from one of them.

This is a frontal view of my word wall.  I used a strip of purple ribbon to bring it al together.  I use magnetic tape on my words so I leave the white board blank so they will stay up!  Along the top of the board I used a teal, sparkly burlap ribbon.

Last (but not least) here is my classroom door to start off the year!
Go check out the other fun classroom makeovers over at Primary Gal!

"Highlight"ing the Common Core!

Almost everyone is familiar with Highlights magazine but they have really stepped up to help teachers out with the Common Core!  They have included new features to make implementing Highlights into the classroom easier and (most importantly) meaningful.  These new features also help teachers fulfill all those "keywords" that evaluators are looking for in lessons... objectives, connections, technology, vocabulary and so much more!

Teacher's Guide

Each month comes with a Teacher's Guide which includes whole group, small group, mini lesson, and independent lesson plans.  I love that a clearly written objective is included with each lesson  (we are required to post those in our room)... such a time saver!  Many of the features of the lesson are some of the key elements that many evaluators are looking for... before lesson connections, after the lesson wrap up, and vivid vocabulary.  Plus, the Common Core Standard is listed for each of the lessons.

They also included some awesome printables that you can copy and use with your lessons...

There is also a section with Highlights Online suggestions.  You can use technology to extend your lessons!  Tips and tricks for parents are a great way to bridge the school to home connections.

Student Issue

The student issues are as colorful as ever!  They are jammed pack with stories of different levels, poetry, science experiments, crafts, and non-fiction entries.

There are tons of student submitted questions and material...

So how do I use it in my classroom?

There are tons of ways to implement Highlights into your classroom.
~With different levels of text in each issue you can keep them at your guided reading table and use them with almost all of your groups!
~Make them available in your classroom library for students to check out and keep in their book boxes.
~Highlights includes many "interactive" elements.  Have students write to the advice column "Dear Highlights."  They can submit jokes or poetry to Highlights... there are so many ways to get your students involved and submitting to Highlights.
~Use the social skills articles to discuss how students can be better members of your classroom community.
~Complete the science experiment as a class or vote on one of the crafts to complete!

There are SO many activities, articles, stories, and pieces in Highlights that it will be easy to implement it in your classroom.... Your students will love it and now with all of the Common Core teacher tools you will love it to!

The Creative Teacher Giveaway: DIY Classroom Number Magnets!

Yeah!  It's time for another Creative Teacher Giveaway!  These are so much fun to participate in and I love the chance to read the posts of the other teachers!  So many great projects!

This time around, I chose to make some number magnets for my classroom.  I am going to use these on my magnetic lunch choice board.  Students will move them to the part of of the magnet board that shows their lunch choice.

First I ordered these 1x1 squares from Sun & Moon Craft Kits.
Next I created the image I wanted... I went with a number and one of the Stick Kids from Graphics from the Pond... you can purchase a ton of different stick kids here.  I love them and use them all the time in my products.

Cut out and use collage pauge to attach the images to the clear squares.  You want the image to show through the square.  Allow them to dry.

Once they are dry, you can attach a magnet to the back.  I chose flat magnet sheets that already had adhesive backing. I cut squares that were slightly smaller than the size of the magnet and simply stuck them to the back.

Here is a picture of the final result!  Super cute and they match my room!

Enter the rafflecopter below for a chance to win your own set of magnets!  I will even make them to match your classroom!   (If you don't use numbers in your classroom, I will make them to meet your needs!)

Rhyme to Read with a Giveaway!!!

I am always looking for great apps for my students, especially my struggling readers.  The two most important requirements I look for in an app are...

~Is it meaningful?  There are a lot of apps out there that start off meaning well but kids quickly learn how to manipulate them into simply being games.  Believe me, I enjoy fun and games just as much as the next person but I want to make sure my students are actually learning during the fun and games.

~Is it easy to navigate?  I LOVE an app that is easy for kids to navigate.  If a student is already uncomfortable with a skill then adding a difficult to navigate app on top of that causes even more frustration.

This app meets those requirements and much, much more.    Rhyme to Read was created by two teachers Sara Hines and Lynn Klaiman.  These two ladies have a TON of experience teaching reading to kids!

Included in the app are 20 leveled stories.  Students start at a beginning level and work their way up through the levels.  Each story builds upon the skills taught in the books before.

Word families or chunks in words are a different color so students learn to look for those when they are stuck on a word.  Students can always go back and read any of the books they read in the past, reinforcing skills that they have learned.  Here is a sample page from the first book.
Here is a sample page from book 20.    You can see that the character is even familiar to the students.  I LOVE how they build upon previously taught skills... this is a great way to build confidence!

Enter the rafflecopter below for a chance to win the full version of this awesome app (a $9.99 value!).
