Valentine's Day FREEBIE!

Starting off the New Year, our school has a new librarian.  She is a wonderful lady that taught preschool for 25 years and has a true love of books and reading.  She was a WONDERFUL find and we are so glad to have her.  She asked me this week if she should get Valentine's for the whole school.  Instead of having her buy so many Valentine's, I decided to make her Valentine bookmarks that she could give to the kids!

I made a black and white version and color version.  Both can be downloaded for FREE here! They look great on colored paper and much cheaper to print.

Copy them on white paper and you have a bookmark that the kids can color themselves.

I am hoping that if my son colors one, he might not loose it.  This is what he uses as a bookmark...any scrap he can find.

Have a great Valentine's Day!

Interactive Math Journals { Place Value }

Place value can be such a fun topic to teach in first grade.  When students really "GET" it you feel such a sense of pride.  Here are some interactive notebook activities that will help you teach place value to your primary kiddos!

Students count 10's and 1's and determine if the amount is more or less and 100!

Students find 10 more, 10 less, 1 more and 1 less than a given number.

Students match the ones, tens, and hundreds block units.

Students count tens and ones to show a number.

Students draw the base tens blocks and ones to show the number.

Students show 10 more and 10 less than a given number.

Students count by tens to fill in the accordion.

Students mentally add or subtract 10 from any number.

Student circle ones into groups of 10's.

Students use the <, >,  and = than sign to show place value.

Students count the base ten blocks to show a number.

100th Day Celebration Linky

Link up your 100th Day Celebration activities, snacks, games and lessons.  All teachers are super excited to hit day 100!!  I know I always am.  The day seems to go quick and this year our 100th day was on a Friday!!  How lucky were we?  Grab this button and link up your ideas.

I always try to keep it fairly simple on day 100.  This year my kindergarten students were super pumped to use 100 stickers on base ten strips.  After placing 100 stickers on the strips, students came to me so that I could help measure the size of their head.  We used sentence strips to create 100 day hats!!  So simple and still learning!!
Another super easy station is to have 100 piece puzzles.  My students enjoyed working together as they completed puzzles in groups.
Each year I say that I am NOT making Fruit Loop necklaces.  In the past I have found that students lose count as they make them and eat on them the rest of the day!!  Not only are they eating them, but the kiddos crunch them into my rug as the STOMP on them.  Well, as you see below, I tackled this project again.  This year went much smoother than in the past.  I used a counter sheet to help students count out 100 Fruit Loops.  I also had students group the Fruit Loops into colors.  Finally, after all the necklaces were made.....  the necklaces went into backpacks!!  They got to put them on before they got on the bus for dismissal.  (I let students wear them for about 15 minutes, then they went into backpacks.)
Do you have any great 100 day celebration tricks and tips?  Have you celebrated the 100th day of school?  Link up below.

New Year, New Ideas, New Possibilities

 photo newyear001_zps959c1e17.png

It's the new year so it's time to share something new!  I'm happy to be able to share my Whole Class Writing Journal covers.  These have been such a lifesaver for my writing station.  I just print the covers I want (each cover has a writing prompt on the front) and then bind the cover with writing paper (included in the packet).

The prep is so simple and quick.  These are also awesome for early finishers.  There is always something to write about... fiction stories, making lists, non-fiction stories, letters, opinion writing.

There are 150 different covers in this packet!  You can grab it up for over 50% off for the next week!

Link up something you would like to share for the new year!   It could be a new product, time saving idea, or a goal for the new year!
